AFSCME backs Scherer bill to ensure state employee pay

A bill filed by Democratic state representative Sue Scherer would ensure that state employee payroll continues, no matter the outcome of a legal challenge to a circuit court order secured by AFSCME and 12 other unions.

“We hope to prevail in court, where we think we have a strong case, but Rep. Scherer’s bill can provide an important backstop from the General Assembly,” AFSCME Council 31 Legislative Director Joanna Webb-Gauvin said. “The legislature should pass and the governor should sign this bill as soon as possible.”

The legislation is HB 1798.
