AFSCME members keep flood waters at bay

In late December, AFSCME members and other workers and volunteers across Southern Illinois worked around the clock to keep record flood waters at bay.

At Menard Correctional Center (pictured), AFSCME members used 800 tons of sand in 25,000 sandbags to protect the maximum-security prison from the rising Mississippi River. Using flatbed trailers and picnic tables as walkways, maintenance craftsmen, counselors and correctional officers worked on their days off to transfer more than 200 inmates to safety.

Local 1175 President Jerry Grammer says, "It is truly amazing what has been accomplished in a very short time. Teamwork has been exemplary during a very chaotic situation."

AFSCME members across the state deal with treacherous weather conditions, especially during the cold winter months. Public works teams plow snow and salt icy roads, paramedics respond to weather-related emergencies, and more.

Danger is part of many AFSCME members' work lives. Tragically, Shawn Beaupre, a dedicated correctional officer and AFSCME Local 494 member, died in a car accident caused by freezing rain on his way to work at Pontiac Correctional Center on December 28. Shawn will be greatly missed by friends and his large, loving family of 11 children.

“Shawn always had a smile on his face,” remembers his longtime co-worker Duane Beal. “It was a joy working with the man.”
