Don’t move with Golan’s until workers get a fair contract

Golan's workers on strikePlanning a move? Don’t go with Golan’s! AFSCME members are urged to boycott Golan’s Moving & Storage, located in Skokie, a suburb north of Chicago, until management negotiates in good faith with its employees.

After many months of management foot-dragging in contract negotiations and various unfair labor practices, Golan’s Moving & Storage workers went out on strike July 28. Vowing to stay out as long as it takes to get a fair first contract, frustrated employees are working with religious and labor leaders to increase pressure on management to bargain in good faith.

Workers at the moving company first began to organize last year to protest the company’s wage theft practices – for example, requiring employees to arrive at work at 6:30 a.m. but only paying them once their truck is headed out for a job, generally around 8 a.m. The workers went to Arise Chicago, a faith-based workers’ rights group, who then linked them to Teamsters Local 705. In December 2013, Golan’s workers voted overwhelmingly to form a union.

Since then, Golan’s management has made token gestures to address workers’ concerns but has refused to negotiate in good faith, repeatedly cancelling or cutting short bargaining sessions.

Show your support for Golan’s workers by boycotting their moving services. To find out more about solidarity actions in support of the strikers, visit Arise Chicago's website
