Gather support to reopen Tamms CC!

Since Tamms CC in southern Illinois closed in early 2013, overcrowding continues to plague DOC facilities.

Tamms acted as a “safety valve” for the correctional system, providing a place where the most dangerous inmates in the state could be housed, protecting employees and inmates at other facilities. The dangerous inmates once housed there are now spread throughout the state.

AFSCME vigorously fought the closure of Tamms, predicting that the safety of correctional employees as well as inmates would be put at risk if the prison were shuttered. Many of those predictions have unfortunately come true and calls to reopen the facility have grown over time.

My Brother’s Keeper, a faith-based group with members in the communities near the shuttered facility, is now collecting signatures for a petition that will be delivered to the General Assembly calling for reopening Tamms CC.

You can download the petition here. Circulate it among your friends, family and co-workers and let them know how reopening Tamms can help make DOC facilities safer while providing good jobs for southern Illinois.

Completed petitions should be returned to Marsha Griffin, the founder of My Brother’s Keeper, at P.O. Box 858, Jonesboro , IL 62952.
