Support union musicians and theater employees

One way to support the labor movement is to patronize businesses that employ union members and respect workers’ rights. All of the musicians in this concert – set for Wednesday, June 24 – are union members and the Auditorium Theater is a union venue, with all support functions provided by union labor.

In Chicago, the historic Auditorium Theater has a long history of employing union members, ranging from musicians to stagehands. The theater employs members of 11 unions and also has a project labor agreement in place covering growth and construction projects.

Now, AFSCME members have a great opportunity to support their fellow union brothers and sisters – and enjoy a concert featuring some of the country’s best musicians. On June 24, the Auditorium Theater will host American Federation of Musicians member Jake Shimabukuro, a ukulele player who achieved viral video fame with his cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” backed by Chicago’s own City Lights Orchestra, also represented by the AFM.

This show alone will also provide work for more than 100 union members of various trades and is planned as the first in a series of concerts aimed at supporting the union members who make Chicago’s vibrant cultural institutions work every day.
