A long process came to a happy ending when the votes were finally tallied, showing that, by more than two to one, the 1,200 Public Service Administrator Option 1s had chosen AFSCME representation. Working in general administrative positions in many state agencies, the PSA Is were seeking increased job security fairness treatment and fair compensation.
The group voted in a mail-ballot election held in spring 2008, with 537 votes cast for AFSCME to 227 for the SEIU-ISEA/Laborers. The counting of the ballots was delayed for more than 18 months due to challenges to the composition of the bargaining unit by the state Department of Central Management Services.
AFSCME won representation elections for some 500 PSA Option 2s in November and nearly 200 PSA Option 8ns in October.
