Don't let Congress cut funding for Illinois jobs!

Watch the new AFSCME web video about the importance of aid to state governments--then call Senators Durbin and Burris and tell them to keep Illinois working!

What's at stake?

The jobs bill now being considered in Congress to address unemployment had two key elements: (1) tax breaks for small businesses that add jobs in the private sector, and (2) assistance to states to prevent the loss of jobs in the public sector.

But now the Senate Finance Committee is planning to eliminate the provision extending aid to states--because Republicans are against it.

If that aid is cut, the already giant hole in the Illinois budget will get even bigger. That will mean more cuts to state agencies, universities, local governments and nonprofit agencies too.

Take action!

Let your senators know that it makes no sense to create new jobs while allowing public employees who provide essential services to be laid off.

1. Call the Capitol switchboard at 888-460-0813 (toll free).

2. Ask to speak to Senator Durbin or Senator Burris.

3. When you are connected to their office, deliver this message:

"I’m calling to urge Senator___________ to insist that the Jobs bill now before the Senate include an extension of special federal aid to Illinois and other state governments to help prevent dire budget cuts. There is no better way to reduce unemployment in our country than to make sure that public service workers do not lose their jobs. It makes no sense to create jobs in the private sector while losing them in the public sector. And public services are needed now more than ever.
