SERS Trustee Election: Vote Melissa Garman to protect your pension

An annuitant seat on the State Employees’ Retirement System (SERS) Board of Trustees is at stake in a mail-ballot election starting May 1. All State of Illinois retirees are eligible to vote for Annuitant Trustee candidate Melissa Garman.

Public employee pensions in Illinois are under attack. The SERS Board plays a crucial role in overseeing the pension benefits on which we all depend. It’s critical that SERS members have a voice in the decisions that affect our retirement.

That’s why AFSCME strongly recommends Melissa Garman for the open SERS Annuitant Trustee seat.

Melissa Garman is an experienced and proven advocate for retirement security who served the state of Illinois for more than 30 years as a child abuse investigator at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Melissa serves on the AFSCME Retirees Chapter 31 Executive Board and as president of the DeKalb sub-chapter.

“I’m running for SERS Retiree Trustee because retirees need to have a strong representative to protect the benefits that we’ve earned,” Garman said. “Fully funding the pension system is critical to the security of future benefits for all eligible participants. If elected, I will be a fierce and dedicated advocate for our interests.”

You will receive a trustee election ballot from SERS in the mail the week of May 1. Watch for your ballot, mark your vote for Melissa Garman and return it right away.

Ballots are due May 30.
