Member activism builds support for back pay

Last week, AFSCME members who work for the state departments of Human Services, Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Natural Resources and Public Health flooded the phones of lawmakers to urge passage of the supplemental appropriation needed to pay the back wages owed to employees in these agencies dating to July 2011.

In addition, the union garnered a new round of strong media coverage that emphasized how much money the back wages would put into local economies in communities statewide. The Southern Illinoisan reported on the $21 million owed to workers in its readership area, Progress Illinois noted that $7 million is owed to residents of Chicago's South Side and south suburbs, and the Moline Dispatch covered the $2.8 million due to Quad Cities residents, while the Lee Newspapers reported on the $8 million owed in central Illinois and nearly $5 million in the eastern part of the state.

As a result of our efforts, the AFSCME lobbying team has added several new co-sponsors to the House version of our back wage supplemental, HB3764. Now we have to keep the pressure on.

Take a few moments to send a message to state your representative and senator on their Facebook pages. In some cases you will be able to write a post on their wall. In other cases you will have to send a Facebook message.

• If your representative is a co-sponsor, please thank them and politely urge them to ask their leader to ensure HB3764 is called for a vote.

• If your representative is not yet a sponsor, tell them the importance of receiving the back pay you are owed, and ask them to co-sponsor the bill. Be civil and respectful.
